NCYHA Travel Teams

The NCYHA Travel Program offers the highest level of competition available to our players and providing them with the opportunity to greatly improve their individual and team skills through high intensity practice and advanced competition.

 

The players compete in the Rhode Island Youth Hockey League, comprised of teams in the Southern New England Hockey Conference.

Team Selection and Play

Teams will be selected through a series of fair player evaluations prior to the season. Click here to take you to the page on evaluations and guidelines.

 

Coaches will follow these guidelines pertaining to player ice time:

 

Players will compete and train for fair ice time.

 

Coaches will play to win when they are in a situation to win.

 

When teams have a chance to win, coaches are able to make line-up changes accordingly to give the team the opportunity to win.

 

Ice time is earned, not given.

Travel Team Player Commitment

The commitment to travel hockey should be made by the player who is interested in higher competition and increased ice time. 

 

League games

 

Weekly ice time (3-4+ times a week)

 

Tournaments (typically ~2-3 per season depending on team's availability and options)

The Registration "NCYHA Travel Teams" is not currently available.

Girls Supplemental Tournament Team- Newport Narwhals!

This supplemental tournament program is designed to complement, not conflict with, the regular SCHL season.

 

It provides a valuable opportunity for our female players to gain additional experience and competitive play.

 

Our goal is to participate in three tournaments and practice prior to the tournament(s).

A message from Overspeed Hockey

A message from OverSpeed Hockey:

 

If you've thought about combining hockey with an amazing life experience, we'll be taking two teams of advanced players to the largest youth hockey tournament in Europe this spring.

 

Taking place over April vacation week for most New England/Northeast players, the Riga Hockey Cup attracts teams from all over Europe to Latvia's historic capital city. 

2010 birth years (open to upper end 2011 players) 

2015 birth years (open to upper end 2016 players) 

LEARN MORE / LET US KNOW YOU'RE INTERESTED 

 

Both teams will be coached by former NHL scouting director Toby O'Brien and NCAA Division I assistant coach Graham Johnson.

 

All players must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, who will be included in all team activities. 

 

We want this to be an incredible life experience around the game of hockey, so we're looking for great people along with strong players from all types of programs. 

 

Let us know what questions we can answer for you and we can't wait to see you in Riga!

Evaluations for the New England District Development Camp for Boys born in 2012 (14's), 2011 (15's), 2010 (16's), 2009 (17's) have been set for the below listed dates.

* It is mandatory that players attend both tryouts.

 

Only permanent residents of RI registered with USA Hockey are eligible to participate. Players must attend both evaluation sessions to be selected by RI to attend the New England District camp. NO player will be allowed to tryout without being registered through USA Hockey.

 

Players attending out of state boarding schools are welcome to attend the evaluation, or they could have their school coach nominate them for an "at large" opportunity through the New England District Nomination Process. Note that nomination by a coach will not guarantee an "at large" spot in the camp.

 

All participants must register and pay the fee through this registration page.

 

All players selected are EXPECTED to attend the District camp which will be held in the Summer of 2026. During the camps our players will participate with and against the top players from Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. These camps present an opportunity for our top Rhode Island players to have fun, show their skills and be evaluated for a potential opportunity to progress further in the USA Hockey Player Development Program.

Whalers U10 Green B1 going to TD Garden in Boston!

Congratulations to 4 players from the Whalers U10 Green B1 team (Max, Easton, Chris and Connor) for qualifying to represent Rhode Island Squirt level players.

 

They will play in a 3 v 3 (3 minute mini tournament) at TD Garden Boston later this year.

 

Thank you to RI Hockey and the dedicated volunteers for a memorable tournament last weekend.
