Mite Development Program Description

The Mite Development Program (MDP) objective is to create an environment that fosters better development for our 5 to 8 year-olds during a critical period of their maturation. Our program will utilize USA Hockey’s ADM (American Developmental Model) which is a scientifically based initiative that focuses on long-term athlete development. Research has also shown that by focusing on developing hockey skills, kids develop confidence, creativity and have more fun playing hockey!

Additionally USA Hockey Certified Coaching is a requirement. The program offers and scientifically researched practice plans from USA Hockey’s ADM.

In a cross-ice and station-based environment, a player’s activity level skyrockets which results in better skills development and love of the game. Drills are designed to focus on multiple skills and situations, increasing time with the puck and situational repetition. It’s been proven that kids who begin their hockey training in this environment develop a better and enjoy the game more.

TOP 5 INSPIRATIONS TO SIGN UP FOR MDP

5) NCYHA's MDP was profiled on USAHockey.com as a model Mite program last year.  Read the article and watch the video by clicking here

4)  Cross-ice hockey is proven by USA Hockey's scientific research as the best for U8 (and older in fact) hockey players.  Click here for the big rink video or here for a short reminder article about why cross ice.

3) To see a fun clip of one of our MDP practices at St Georges to get you fired up...click here - I love the part where coach Sean falls at the end.

2) MDP focuses on FUN first and skill development second...fortunately those two things go hand in hand.  Mites learn and develop the most when they are loving what they are doing.

1) The MDP focuses on affordable ice time; your child will have the best hockey experience available and you will even save some gas by not driving all over the region to get that experience.

MDP is typically split into two main groups.

1. Group S- These are the kids who are just starting out. Maybe recent Learn to Skate Program "Graduates". This is the STARTING Group where the skills are still being learned

2. Group R- These are the kids who are returning to MDP, or who have  demonstrated the intermediate/advanced skills required for hockey.

Each of these groups are broken into smaller teams. This gives the kids more time on the ice to do drills and games for development of hockey skills.

So You Want To Play Hockey? You Will Need GEAR!

Whalers equipment tips:

1. ) Hockey Helmet with Cage (tape your child's name to the helmet, the coaches love this). Helmets are often adjustable, so they can grow with your child.

2.) base layer (we are a co-ed organization so start this practice early! Please visit the locker room policy as it is applicable)

base layer should be Comfortable clothing for the hockey player so it does not restrict their movement.

Remember, you may be cold sitting on the bleachers, but they are working up a sweat on the ice; don't be surprised if they prefer short sleeves!

3.) Hockey Skates

4.) Chest protector

5.) Knee and Elbow Pads. Ice is hard and there will be falling. Let's keep the kids protected!

6.) Hockey Gloves (Skates are sharp, lets keep those fingers safe!

7.) Water bottle (please label with your child's name. It will not stop them from leaving it at the rink, but it will make it easier to find).

Crates- brand new skaters will use crates. View details on the Learn to skate page (click here).

Whalers Equipment Wisdom (these tips are free, please pass them on to new parents!)

Make sure you have your child try on their gear. a child may be uncomfortable due to equipment that does not fit correctly.

Try before you buy! If you borrow or have hand me down gear, TRY IT ON!

Take it from an old pro, have the kids try on their skates with skate guards on and walk around the house for a few minutes.

It helps the kids to know a little what to expect BEFORE they are on the ice. especially if it is their first time on skates!

try on any other gear they may be wearing. This will help them to better understand what they are wearing, and this will also give adults dressing their players an idea of how long it will take to put on their gear.

You want to arrive at the rink with time to park and walk in plus dressing time.

one final 'old pro' tip:

have kids try to use the bathroom before they get changed, so if needed, add time in to do this as well.... no matter what age, Nothing is fun when you finally get your kiddo dressed and then you hear, "I need to go to the bathroom...".
