How Many Whalers Does It Take to Build a New England Championship Team?

For the St. George’s Varsity Girls Hockey team the answer is eight:  seven players, an Assistant Coach, and a former Head Coach.  The St. George’s girls were crowned New England Prep School Division 2 Champions for the first time in school history.  Seeded number 2 in the tournament, the Dragons played two games on home ice winning both in overtime in front of raucous home crowds.  These crowds included many current and former Whaler’s cheering on the Lady Dragons including several young girls that recently attended a hockey clinic run by the Lady Dragons.

The Lady Dragons traveled to Nobles & Greenough School for the Division 2 Championship on Sunday morning to face the #1 seed, Brooks School.  Going up 3-0 in the middle of the 2d period, the Dragons found themselves looking at a 3-2 game going into the 3rd period.  With great team defense and significant contributions from former Whaler players they overcame 4 consecutive penalty kills to win the game and the school’s first girl’s hockey championship.

Former Whaler’s on this team include Beth Larcom, Katie Simmons, Maddie Tregenza, Lila Burns, Peyton Mulhern, Megan Grimes, and Maddie Aumann.  SG Asst Coach Brendan Hammatt, a former Whaler goalie, helped guide the team to this achievement over the last two years.  Congratulations to Dragons' Head Coach, Hannah O'Brien, who took the reins from former Head Coach Erika Silva three years ago.  Erika grew up in Middletown playing goalie for the Whalers before moving on to play at Northeastern University and the U.S. National team before becoming Head Coach at SG.  Her recruiting helped set the course that Coach O'Brien has taken the team on.

Beth Larcom, goalie for the Whaler’s Squirt A State Championship back in the day, was named Tournament MVP and New England Prep School Division 2 Player of the Year.

You can watch your fellow Whalers alum play the championship game On Demand at NEPSAC.tv.  Many thanks from all of us to the coaches and staff of Newport Youth Hockey for developing these great hockey players.
